Seating planner

Two quick calculations: how many seats fit in a room, and how many tables and chairs an event needs. These are rules of thumb used by restaurant and event planners. Sources are at the bottom.

How many seats fit in the room?

Only where guests sit, walkways included. Leave out the kitchen, toilets and the bar. In a new restaurant the dining area is often about 60% of the total floor.

How many tables and chairs for an event?

TableTables
Round table, 152 cm (8 guests)
Round table, 183 cm (10 guests)
Banquet table, 183 × 76 cm (6–8 guests)
Banquet table, 244 × 76 cm (8–10 guests)

Rules of thumb only. Local fire and building rules decide exits, aisle widths and the maximum number of people. Always check them for your room.
