Cane is back. How to bring it into a restaurant or hotel without the headaches
Designers name rattan and cane as a key look for 2026. How to use woven backs in busy restaurants and hotels, what to check for wear and cleaning, and which solid-wood rattan chairs fit.

The problem
Guests are tired of rooms that look like every other room. Restaurants and hotels want warmth, texture and something that feels made by hand. But woven furniture has a reputation: it sags, it catches crumbs, and it doesn't survive a busy Saturday.
What is happening
House Digest calls caned furniture "the old-school furniture design trend making a big comeback in 2026". It says cane suits warm, earthy and textured interiors, and fits with softer curves, handcrafted pieces and natural wood. It reports a 1stDibs survey in which 27% of designers named rattan and wicker as key trends for 2026 (source 1).
One of the uses it suggests is the obvious one for hospitality: the seats and backs of dining chairs (source 1).
How to use cane in a busy venue
- Cane on the back, wood or fabric on the seat. The seat takes the weight and the wear. The back only takes a lean. A woven back gives the look without the risk.
- Pick a frame that carries the chair. A solid-wood frame does the structural work, and the cane panel is the detail.
- Mix, don't fill. Cane chairs at a few tables, or along a window, give texture. A whole room of cane can look like a theme.
- Plan the cleaning. Woven panels need a soft brush and a vacuum, not a wet cloth. Tell the cleaning team before the chairs arrive.
- Use it outdoors only if it is made for outdoors. Natural cane is for indoor use.
A useful detail for buyers
From 30 December 2026, the EU deforestation rules apply to wooden furniture. Rattan and bamboo are out of scope, but the wooden frame of the chair is still covered (source 2). Read our EUDR guide.
Where RikoStyle fits
We make three chairs with woven rattan backs on solid-wood frames, each available in beech or oak (source 3):
| Model | Seat height | Width | Seat depth | Note |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Milena rattan chair | 490 mm | 430 mm | 420 mm | Shown with an upholstered seat |
| Sofia rattan chair | 480 mm | 450 mm | 420 mm | Shown with a wooden seat |
| Pony rattan armchair | 450 mm | 540 mm | 460 mm | Armchair, stacking |
All three come in our 10 frame finishes, so the wood can be as light or as dark as the room needs.
We offer these chairs to restaurant and hotel owners, interior designers, furniture retailers and importers, event rental companies and care homes, and we are looking for long-term partners in each of these groups.
